New Career Readiness Certificates help jobseekers and employers

Alabama’s new Career Readiness Certificate provides job seekers with proof that they have basic skills needed for entry-level employment. The certificate is awarded to jobseekers based on their scores on three WorkKeys tests. WorkKeys is a series of tests measuring a person’s skills with those needed for an entry-level job.

“This initiative will help us maintain our status as the best workforce development state in the United States” Gov. Bob Riley said when awarding the state’s first Career Readiness Certificate at a workforce development summit in Birmingham. The Office of Workforce Development was created in 2003 to consolidate Alabama’s variety of workforce development programs into a single office.

Career Readiness Certificates will facilitate AIDT’s recruitment, screening, training and assessment of job seekers to fill new jobs created through expansion and startups in Alabama.

“This certificate will contribute greatly to our quality workforce identification for Alabama’s new and existing businesses, and to our expansion of the opportunities for Alabama citizens through jobs being created by our clients,” said AIDT Director Ed Castile. "This credential will quickly identify the applicants who have the skills each employer is seeking. WorkKeys also will identify skills each person needs to improve and that will direct them to training and prepare and qualify them for jobs."

Career Readiness Certificates are awarded in three levels–gold, silver and bronze–based on WorkKeys scores. For more information on the new program, go to the
Office of Workforce Development website.
